Hello Friends, The chirp of robins and starlings in Napa Valley signals spring has arrived. And the vineyards here in Jamieson Canyon began shaking off their winter slumber several weeks ago.By mid-February, a couple weeks early, the vines' tiny buds showed the first signs of spring swelling. That was a clear signal--it was time to hustle through the winter pruning. In the early days of the growing season, the buds are in a delicate stage. They can easily be knocked off during normal vineyard activities. So to minimize disturbance to the swelling buds, I immediately called in a larger vineyard crew. They did a great job and quickly wrapped up the pruning activity. Now Elkhorn Peak's vines are well manicured and all set for springtime growth. Earlier this year Napa Valley experienced a long stretch of mild, dry weather, followed by a series of storms in late January. I think this combination primed the earth and roots for an early start to the growing season. The vineyard soils are still fairly wet, so we can't get in yet with tractors and weed mowers. We've been tuning up all the equipment, though, so we'll be ready as soon as conditions permit. Thanks for following the Pinot Noir Chronicles. We'll keep you posted on news and activities here in Jamieson Canyon as the 2010 season progresses. Hope you enjoy the new 2007 Pinot Noir! Cheers, |
