The Wine Society of Texas  announces 2004 Top Wine Award for its Texas' Best
Wine Competition;
Congratulations to LightCatcher Winery & Newsom Vineyards - 2004 Texas' Best

The Wine Society of Texas (501c3 non-profit educational organization) is
pleased to announce the winner of the Top Ten Tasting from its 2004 Texas'
Best Wine Competition. Congratulations goes to LightCatcher Winery for its
Merlot, Newsom Vineyard 2002. This wine also was the winner of the Best
Single Vineyard Designated Wine and Best Red Wine in this year's
competition, as well. It is full-bodied red wine made from Merlot grown by
Newsom Vineyards in the Texas High Plains. LightCatcher Winery is owned by
Caris and Terry Turpen. Winemaker - Caris Turpen. Fort Worth, Texas. Newsom
Vineyard is owned by one of the leading grape growers in Texas, Dale Newsom.

LightCatcher Winery, a relatively "new face" on the Texas wine scene, joins
prestigious wineries that have been previous winners of the Society's Lead
Steer bronze statue awarded for leadership in making quality Texas wines.
Previous winners include Becker Vineyards Cabernet-Syrah (2002) and Messina
Hof Winery & Resort Merlot Private Reserve (2003).
This year's Top Ten Tasting and Competition was held in conjunction with the
SAVEUR Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival in Austin, Texas, on April
2, 2004. The tasting was held at the "Farm to Market to Table" event at the
Hotel San Jose which attracted over 200 attendees from around Texas and the
United States. Attendees tasted the top ten Texas wines and voted for their
favorites. The Top Ten winners represented in the taste-off included:

Val Verde Winery, Merlot 2001
Homestead Winery Bodega de Mitchell, Cream Sherry NV
Messina Hof Winery & Resort, Johannisberg Riesling 2003
Becker Vineyards, Cabernet Syrah 2002
Kiepersol Estates, Texas Syrah 2001
Messina Hof Winery & Resort, Cabernet Sauvignon Private Res. 2001
Haak Vineyards & Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon - Reddy Vineyards 2002
Light Catcher Winery, Merlot - Newsom Vineyard 2002
Sister Creek Vineyards, Muscat Canelli 2002
Barking Rocks Cabernet Sauvignon, Newsom Vineyard 2002

These ten wines received the highest scores from the judges in the 2004
Texas' Best Wine Competition sponsored by the Wine Society of Texas. In
fact, the big news this year, was that all Top Ten Texas wines in the
competition outscored the Gold Medal winning non-Texas wines used as
"ringers" in the competition. This competition was held March 5, 2004 at the
Conrad Hilton School of Hotel & Restaurant Management at the University of
Houston. Over 150 wines competed and were tasted and judged "blind" (without
knowledge of the producer in combination with selected award winning
non-Texas wines) by a panel of wine specialists and knowledgeable consumers
using a modified U.C. Davis 20 point scoring method.

Congratulations to Light Catcher Winery and Newsom Vineyards for a job well
done!!
